Carmel Motors was Robert Scully's business name when he was based in London as a standard mechanics. With over 45 years in the mechanics industry, Robbie has a lot of experience to pass onto students who are interested in the field of expertise. This community project was set up to empower disadvantaged children looking to go into the mechanics industry but do not have the grades to apply and be on a course. This also gives those children looking to go into the industry some experience in a working garage which is a key thing that the employers are looking for.
Alison has supported Robbie throughout their partnership, with her expertise stemming from working the children in a teaching environment and being able to bring her expertise from that field of work to this one to work alongside her husband.
The business was set up in 2015 and is still gaining speed in partnering with local schools and collages to offer the opportunity to students interested. With Robbie having the business in London he has been able to bring all of his equipment and tools along with all of his experience of a working garage. This can be clearly seen in his enthusiasm when talking about the topic, being able to make anyone enthusiastic about the subject. Within the first year of being operational, they have had a number of students come into the system and complete the course.
The students will acquire a number of skills from the pre-apprenticeship that will be that can be used in later life. These skills consist of time management, team work, organizational, communication and an improved work ethic on top of the basics of car mechanics to give the student a clearer understanding what businesses are looking for. These skills are highly coveted by employers and organisations for any position that they are looking to fill. The mechanics skill that they learn may or may not aid the student in the future depending on what they wish to do.
